As part of its Royal and Noble Sale on Wednesday, Sotheby’s in London offered the Attallah Cross for sale.
After five minutes of bidding, the reality TV star from the United States emerged victorious.
Princess Diana wore the amethyst cross, a 1920s pendant by luxury jewelry designer Garrard that she wore numerous times.
The princess wore it most famously in October 1987 at the London charity gala for Birthright, which advocates for women’s human rights during pregnancy and childbirth.
Large amethyst stones are set in a cross-shaped pendant that is framed by 5.2-carat diamonds.
In the 1980s, a businessman named Naim Attallah bought it for the first time. Because of his friendship with Diana, he loaned it to her several times over the course of many years. The item was put up for auction by his estate.
Compared to Sotheby’s pre-sale estimate of £80,000 to £120,000, reality TV star Kardashian paid a total of £163,800 for the cross.
Kristian Spofforth, head of jewelry at Sotheby’s London, stated: Rarely does jewelry that the late Princess Diana owned or wore come on the market, especially something as colorful, bold, and distinctive as the Attallah Cross.
“To a certain extent, this unusual pendant is symbolic of the princess’s growing self-assurance in her sartorial and jewelry choices at that particular time in her life,” the artist wrote.
Kardashian has expressed an interest in a number of historically significant pieces of fashion.
